12 SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL AREAS UNDER INVESTIGATION
FOR 2016 OSCARS®

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 12 distinct scientific and technical investigations have been launched for the 2016 Oscars®.

These investigations are made public so individuals and companies with devices or claims of innovation within these areas will have the opportunity to submit achievements for review.

The deadline to submit additional entries is Tuesday, August 30, at 5 p.m. PT.  The Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee has started investigations into the following areas:

• High-resolution digital motion picture cameras with sensors sized Super 35 or larger
• Recent advancements in motion control software
• Recent advancements in wireless microphone technology
• Computer-printed, seamless scenic backdrops
• Camera flange depth measurement devices
• Shading programming languages for production rendering
• Ray-tracing production renderers supporting physically-based shading and light transport
• Real-time, vector-based drawing tools for sketching and markup in film production
• Fast-reset bullet hit kits for live-action production
• On-set, real-time, principal camera tracking technology
• Electrodeless plasma arc lamps for motion picture lighting
• Reconfigurable, rideable, life-size animatronic horses

The committee also will continue its investigation of rig-based solvers for tracking and animating deforming objects from image sequences, which it tabled in 2015.

After thorough investigations are conducted in each of the technology categories, the committee will meet in early December to vote on recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors, which will make the final awards decisions.

The 2016 Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017.

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.  The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Vishal Jadhav (India), Flying Rainbow, Nature / Environment / Wildlife –Flying Rainbow is a Documentary about Oriental Dwarf kingfishers and their survival in the Western Ghats of India before and during the relentless monsoon season.  With sweeping, gorgeous cinematography and engaging commentary, it portrays the relationship that the weather has with these birds.  A labor of love filmed over a period of 7 years.

Matthew. K Firpo (USA / GREECE), REFUGE, Documentary Short – Refuge is a chronicle of human stories from the European Refugee Crisis, focused on the simple, important fact that every refugee is a human being, with hopes and losses and families just like each of us.  Filmed on location in Greece the filmmaker creates artfully told stories with authenticity, rawness and genuine heart.

Ben Proudfoot (USA), Montage: Great Film Composers and the Piano, Doc Short – Chronicles celebrated pianist Gloria Cheng’s challenge to the world’s greatest film composers – write original pieces for solo piano.  Exceptional, touching and absolutely engaging. Stars Oscar winnersJohn Williams, Randy Newman, Alexandre Desplat, Michael Giacchino and Emmy winners Bruce Broughton and Don Davis.

Melissa Kent (USA), Bernie and Rebecca, Film Short – Bernie and Rebecca’s first date is about imagining a life of marriage, children, infidelity and divorce.  A surprising and surprisingly real script that is skillfully executed by director Kent with nuanced, emotive, amusing and touching performances by Kyle Davis (American Horror Story, Dexter) and Brianna Barnes (Host of Globe Trekker).

All Student Academy Award-winning films are eligible to compete for 2016 Oscars® in the Documentary Short Subject, Animated Short Film or Live Action Short Film category.  Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 49 Oscar® nominations and have won or shared eight awards in several categories, including Writing, Directing, Documentary Feature and Animated Feature Film.

Students will arrive in Los Angeles for a week of industry activities that will culminate in the awards ceremony on Thursday, September 22, at 7:30 p.m., at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.  The medal placements – gold, silver and bronze – in the seven award categories will be announced at the ceremony.

New this year, the Foreign Film category has been expanded to include separate awards for narrative, animation and documentary entries.  Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal awards will be given in the Foreign Narrative category; Gold Medal awards will be given in the Foreign Animation and the Foreign Documentary categories.  The U.S. competition categories remain the same: Alternative, Animation, Narrative and Documentary. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal awards will be given in each.

The 43rd Student Academy Awards ceremony on September 22 is free and open to the public, but advance tickets are required.  Tickets may be obtained online at oscars.org starting today.  Any remaining tickets will be made available at the door on the evening of the event.  The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills.

REMEMBERING THE MASTERS: HASKELL WEXLER AND VILMOS ZSIGMOND

From its first editions Camerimage Festival became a platform for discussion about the past, the present, and the future of cinema. By inviting hundreds of cinematographers and other film industry professionals from all over the world, we encouraged dialogue and exchange of ideas, as well as confronting oneself with the art of the best and most distinguished filmmakers around. Thus came “Remembering the Masters”, the section commenced in 2012 and is dedicated to the medium's greatest visual poets. It is an extension of our mission, and simultaneously an act of emphasizing the way the past informs the future.

„Remembering the Masters” became a celebrated Camerimage section, both by the industry professionals and the participants who do not work in the world of film. Throughout the years we have presented masterpieces shot by Jerzy Lipman, John Alcott, Zygmunt Samosiuk, Néstor Almendros and Gunnar Fischer, among others. This year the section will be somewhat special, as it will be entirely devoted to the work of Haskell Wexler and Vilmos Zsigmond, two universally acclaimed masters of light and frame, recipients of Camerimage Lifetime Achievement Awards and our dearest friends, who passed away a couple of months ago, leaving us all with countless, brilliant cinematic images, and the sadness of knowing that we will never see them again in person.

We will show three works of Haskell Wexler: Miloš Forman'sOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Norman Jewison'sIn the Heat of the Night, and Mike Nichols'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; all three being landmark cinematic achievements, whether in displaying non-conformist attitudes, racial tensions in the U.S., or the beauty of black-and-white cinematography. For the last one, Wexler was awarded with the first of the two Oscars® in his career.

As a tribute to Vilmos Zsigmond, we will also screen three films. Camerimage participants will have the opportunity of seeing Robert Altman'sMcCabe & Mrs. Miller, John Boorman'sDeliverance, and Michael Cimino'sThe Deer Hunter on big screen. Each of the projects is widely different from another, and applying various means of cinematic expression – a revisionist western, an intense tale of survival, a poignant anti-war manifesto – all of them, however, being perfect encapsulations of the magic of cinema.

Out of Wexler's and Zsigmond's visions “New Hollywood” of 1970s was born, remaining to this day a guiding light for all politically and socially oriented filmmakers who make their pictures to start a meaningful dialogue with the audiences.

We will post more information about the dates and screening venues in the upcoming months, together with the details of the program of the 24th edition of Camerimage.

The 2016 San Diego International Kids Film Festival ( SDIKFF) completed its mission on August 28,  in the American Spirit Theater at Escondido, CA.  The extra long corridor covered with beautiful vines on the top to create shade, the red carpet on the paths to create the glamour, in between, those beautiful people from worldwide were walking on the red carpet with proud and honor to represent their films.   At the hallway of the theater, every film makers signed their name on the signature wall to have the permanent mark on the history and interviewed by the red carpet MC to tell the world about their projects.

The award ceremony hosted by Hollywood celebrities--- David Lockhart; Prince Jordan Tyson; Tammie Starr , and the San Diego local actors-- Isabelle Hu; Davin Scott Higginbotham.   The performers are cultural groups of Philippine ( “bamboo” Dance), Korean (Drum Dance )and the India (Top dance ). The   solo dance performed by child actress Xinyan Shi (China). The award presenters are the film juries and the 9^th San Diego International Kids’ Film Festival best actress Miaomiao and the juries of the 2016 SDIKFF.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award is the annual prize established by Jaeger-LeCoultre in association with the Venice International Film Festival
to pay tribute to personalities who have contributed to creating and bringing life to the art of filmmaking.

Jaeger-LeCoultre attaches great importance to honour a unique artistic vision.

Yesterday, in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema, Jaeger-LeCoultre Communication Executive Director Laurent Vinay presented Amir Naderi
with the Glory to the Filmmaker award for his significant contribution to a new era of Iranian films, alongside Alberto Barbera, Director of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.

Following the award ceremony, the 73rd Film Festival presented the out of competition screening of Naderi’s new film Monte, in its world premiere in Venice.

The story of a girl preparing for the fight of her life – told by István Kovács – titled “The Sound of Concrete” (Betonzaj) won the main Award, the Golden BuSho of the 12th Budapest International Short Film Festival on Saturday evening. As a small surprise – for until this time it has not occurred that two Hungarian creations were among the best – the Silver BuSho went to Áron Ferenczik’s “Mr. Miller” (Szabó úr), that presented the strange life of a man who suffers from the loss of his senses. The Bronze BuSho was awarded to a Bulgarian-German co-production “Getting Fat in a Healthy Way”, directed by Kevork Aslanyan, in which a tragical accident disturbs the gravitational field of the Earth.

The moderators announced in the lead-in of the Award Ceremony held in Puskin Cinema, that this year 74 shorts were selected in the competition programme; the total number of submissions was 1189. The audience could watch this last week in Puskin Cinema together with the international Jury and at the repeated screenings in Corvin Club, or at the venues in the country side and over the border. The winners were selected from among these, and they could bring the statuettes made by Solide Art. The members of the international Jury were: Nadya Bakuradze, Russian experimental film maker and video artist, Christian Inaraja Genís, artist and illustrator from Catalunya, the Hungarian jury member this year was Teréz Koncz, creative producer and director, and our permanent member of the jury, Wolfgang Leis.

First, the members of the Student Jury – delegated by 4 higher education institutions (University of Theatre and Film Arts, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Eötvös Loránd Science University, Metropolitan University) – were called to the stage who thanked for the opportunity to take part in the Festival and gave short reasoning for their decisions. They deemed an Italian picture,Bellissima as best fiction, the second episode of the great Austrian come-backer, Metube 2 as best experimental short, and Beyond by Milán Kopasz as best animation.

These were followed by the category prizes of the International Jury, at first those were announced who could not take part in the ceremony in person. This year saw a very strong competition in animation, and Koji Yamamura’s work, Satie’s “Parade” (Japan) triumphed. The prize for best idea/screenplay went well-deservedly to We Can't Live Without Cosmos, Konstantin Bronzit’s multiple award winner animation and also Oscar nominee. According to the Jury their easiest task was to decide about the best Comedy: this prize was given to The black bear, made in the co-production of France and Belgium. The Prize for Best Cinematography went to the animation Edmond directed by Nina Gantz, a production of the Netherlands. The unforgettable performance of Julia Pointner child actress in Patrick Vollrath’ s Alles wird gut , an Austrian production, was honoured by the award for Best Performance. The Special Prize of Búgócsiga, the venue in Sopron was given Kata Oláh (a 3-day excursion for 2 persons to Sopron combined with an audience meeting) for her work, En Passant. The audience award this year was presented to Balázs Simonyi’sIndián.

After this the awardees present were asked to accept their prizes. For the second time this year the prize of the Media Council and Authority of the National Media and Telecommunication –that is a 2 x 500 thousand forints award– was given for the best Hungarian animation and fiction work. The prizes were handed over by Tamás Kollarik, Member of the Media Council, and Ferenc Varsányi, the president of the Animation Jury of the Media Council. The best Hungarian animation in 2016 at the 12th BuSho Festival wasCosmic Jacuzzi by Anikó Takács, and the best short feature was the work of István Kovács, Betonzaj. Also for the second time among the prizes that was offered by Sziget Ltd. a weekly pass for a 3-member mini crew with filming permission on the Sziget festival in 2017. Gyöngyi Fazekas took this prize for her work Képzavar (Catachresis). The Special Mention of the Jury and a special statuette was given to Ábel Visky forRomanian Sunrise. The BuSho Award 2016 for Best Experimental was given to Reinhold Bidner (being the third Austrian awarded) for Ex Terrat. He was present at the Festival all week, and –as he later told us– he would stay in Budapest for 2 months as a grantee of a study visit!

Before the announcement of the winners of the main prizes, Christian Inaraja Genis was invited to the stage to share the opinion and experience of the Jury about the Festival. After thanking for the participants for their work, he briefly added that –even though they could have decided in a different way– this decision is theirs and they are proud of it. Then the winners of the main prizes were announced along with a short evaluation of the jury.

“For a simple love story created by surrealistic circumstances and magical dedication.” The Bronze BuSho prize 2016 was awarded to:

Getting Fat In A Healthy Way, Kevork Aslanyan (Bulgaria-Germany).

 “For the most thought- provoking film in the competition.” and thus the winner of the Silver BuSho 2016:

Mr. Miller, by Áron Ferenczik (Hungary).

Finally the International Jury gave the following reasoning for the winner of the Golden BuSho 2016: “For creating the most powerful film. Which combines the most powerful character, storytelling and team effort in the competition.”

The main award of the 12th BuSho was handed over to István Kovács for The Sound of Concrete (Betonzaj).

Finally, thanks were given to the sponsors for making it possible to organize the event for the 12th time: The Central European Initiative, Hungarian National Film Fund, Hungarian Academy of Arts, Balassi Institute, Pensum, Biogroup Hungary LLC, the Austrian Culture Forum, the Embassy of Israel, the Italian Culture Institute of Budapest, and Staropramen. The cooperative partner was the Budapest Festival and Tourism Center. The Award Sponsors were Solide Art – the creator of the main prizes, National Media and Infocommunications Authority, Sziget LLC and Búgócsiga from Sopron. The Media partners of the Festival are Filmvilág, Filmtekercs, Fotovideo Magazines and Radio Klub.

Subsequently the awardees, the international guests, the members of the Student and the International Jury and the staff members were invited up to the stage for a group picture. After the closing ceremony, the audience could watch some of the winners and as the last stage of the festival a concert given by “Zsuzsi mosolyog” was presented in Fészek Klub.

The Premio Nuova Imaie is awarded to two Italian debutant and already talented actors who moved the Lido's audience with their interpretation. SYNOPSIS

A man wakes up one morning with an annoying ringing sound in his ears. A note on the fridge says: "Your friend Luigi has died. P.S. I took the car". The problem is that he does not even remember who this guy Luigi is. This is just the beginning of a tragicomic day during which he will be plunged into the folly of the world. One of those days that changes your life forever.

Jury's motivation : "For the values finely expressed on the importance of family, time passed together in respect and with love, and those valuesof human rights which we all share.
 
The maturity and depth of emotions and cinematic vocabulary used to display these belie the young age of the director, and we look forward to seeing many more of his films in the future.
 
HOTEL SALVATION is part of the Biennale College - Cinema program at the Venice Film Festival which gives support since 2012 to the young filmmakers to bring their vision to the big screen and in this case the effort has borne marvelous fruit. "

Three years ago, Shubhashish Bhutiani’s short film KUSH had won the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film. 
 

Starring Adil Hussain (Life of Pi), Mukti Bhawan is a joyful tale of love and leave-taking.

It takes place in a hotel where people check in to spend the last days of their lives. However, the story is not that much about death but much more about a special father/son relationship and their capacity to let go.

It seems the audience in Venice was carried away by this universal story of love, redemption and mourning.

After receiving the Orizzonti Prize for Best Short Film for his short ‘Kush’, Indian director Shubhashish Bhutiani is back to Venice with his feature debut ‘Mukti Bhawan’ (Hotel Salvation).

SYNOPSIS

While Rajiv struggles to juggle his responsibilities back home, Daya starts to bloom as he finds a sense of community in the hotel, and a companion in the 75-year old Vimla. As the days go by and Daya shows no sign of letting up, Rajiv is faced with the dilemma of whether to remain there with his father or fulfil his duty back home.

Juan Sebastián Mesa, the 27 year old director, wins the Circolo del Cinema di Verona Audience Award for LOS NADIE (The Nobodies) at the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Seventeen years after the victory of Mondo Grúa, the film that revealed the talent of Argentinean Pablo Trapero, Latin America triumphs again in the Venice International Film Critics’ Week thanks to the Colombian film Los Nadie, winner of the Circolo del Cinema di Verona Audience Award of this 31st edition.

Camilo, Mechas, Manu, Ana and Pipa are five friends going through that blended trance of intense unrest, sense of astonishment, contained tenderness and manifest rage typical of the end of adolescence. They survive at the edge, both physical and symbolic, of a city, Medellin, that attracts and excludes them, that lures them with promises but rejects them with hostility, but which they embrace by transforming the dominant logics of fear that come from above, from the powers that be and from their parents. Music, street art and friendship are their weapons of resistance, and fuel their hope for a journey, a rite of passage that will convert them into someone else.

The first feature from Colombian director Juan Sebastián Mesa, after his short ‘Kakashnikov’ (2013) nominated for best national short film by the Colombian academy Awards.

SYNOPSIS

After winning the Premio Nuovo Imaie yesterday, ORECCHIE (Ears) wins two other awards: the Arca CinemaGiovani award(Young Cinema award) and the FEDIC Award with an honorable mention.

Arci CinemaGiovani Award (Young Cinema award) is an award given by a jury of young European aged from 18 to 25 year old to the best Italian film at the Venice Film Festival.

ORECCHIE won a special mention from the FEDIC award for proposing  the most significative scene in relation with food and alimentation. 

ORECCHIE's main actor, Daniele Parisi, won The Premio Nuova Imaie, organized in collaboration with the Union of Cinema Critics.

Directed by Alessandro Aronadio, ORECCHIE (Ears) is a fresh Italian comedy from this year's Biennale College Cinema section.

Fien Troch won Best Director Award for her film HOME @ Venice Film Festival tonight.

HOME portrays the struggle between two generations. Teenagers who explore a thin line between trust, friendship and loyalty and adults who seem alienated from their past younger selves. The clash can be more brutal than expected.

17-year-old Kevin, sentenced for violent behavior, is just let out of prison. To start anew, he moves in with his aunt and her family and begins an apprenticeship at her store. Quickly he adapts to his new home and gets along well with his cousin Sammy, in his last year of highschool. Through Sammy and his friends, Kevin meets John. Upon discovering John's unbearable situation with his mother, Kevin feels the urge to help his new friend. One evening fate intervenes and questions of betrayal, trust and loyalty start to direct their daily lives more then ever.

HOME, together with 17 other films was competing for the Orizzonti section which aims to represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema. This edition's international jury of the Orizzonti section was chaired by French director Robert Guédiguian and composed  by US film critic and historian Jim Hoberman, Egyptian actress Nelly Karim, Italian actress Valentina Lodovini, Korean actress and director Moon So-ri, Spanish film critic and scholar Josè Maria (Chema) Prado, and Indian director Chaitanya Tamhane.

"In Home, I want to explore the field of tension between two generations. How do adults go about their responsibilities towards teenagers and how do these young people try to find their way into adulthood themselves. In this community of two struggling generations, I looked for a storyline that centers on the themes of parental love, freedom, loyalty, betrayal and violence." - Director, Fien Troch -

HOME already received a lot of enthusiasm form the press in Venice :
 
Troch handles this complex material with assurance and secures convincing performances from her entire cast with stand-out work from Sebastian Van Dun who invites comparisons with James Dean or the young Sean Penn as the deceptively self-effacing Kevin. SCREEN INTERNATIONAL
 
Troch has coaxed fine, wholly unaffected work from her spiky, largely untested young ensemble, many of them first-timers, with Guidotti particularly heart-rending as the tormented, critically unsupported John. VARIETY

After it's World Premiere in Venice, HOME will continue its international journey to Toronto Film Festival where it will be screened on Tuesday in the Platform section.
