Douglas Petrie – PaPa

Douglas Petrie (USA)PaPa, Film Short – A lonely mechanic builds a mechanical boy – and becomes an unlikely Father to his own creation, brilliantly telling a story about love, loss, and family connection – all without dialogue. From the opening rainy-day scene, the audience is drawn into the pain and loneliness of the man…sadness splashed across his face and body language in what is just the beginning of an exceptional and nuanced performance by Clancy Brown (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Shawshank Redemption). Written and directed by acclaimed Writer / Director Emmy-Nominee Douglas Petrie (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Daredevil) he takes the audience on an emotional ride with laughter and tears, the affection, joy and emotional depths are palpable without a word being spoken. The charmingly engaging robot flawlessly comes to life by celebrated puppeteer Frank Langeley IV (TRON: Legacy, Spider-Man 2). Beautiful lighting and cinematography by American Society of Cinematographers winner Logan Schneider (Gentefied, Drunk History) accompanied by a touching soundtrack from Zev Burrows (Fox Tale, Absent) and tight editing by Monty Degraff (Daredevil, The Man in the High Castle). Exceptional filmmaking in every aspect from a team of superbly talented pros. Produced by Janina Gavankar (The L Word, True Blood).

The Cesar will be thoroughly restructured

The new César statutes were adopted at the CNC this Thursday, July 9, 2020.

They make it possible to reform in depth the composition and governance of the Association which organizes the Caesars.

Before the beginning of September, all the voting members of the Académie des César (4,313 to date) will be able to apply and vote to appoint their 170 representatives, spread over 21 professional branches, within of the new General Assembly of the Association.
It is this renewed General Assembly (elected for 4 years) which will then elect, for a term of 2 years renewable once, the new Board of Directors of the Association, as well as a tandem Woman / Man for the Presidency.

These new statutes will make it possible to achieve full parity among the elected members of the GA, of the CA, of the Bureau and of the Presidency of the Association.
As soon as this new elected governance takes office, it will have to quickly review the rules of membership of the Academy to achieve greater parity, diversity and representativeness among the voters, increase the number, and take all the necessary decisions to organize the 2021 edition of the Cesars.

The Césars would particularly like to thank the CNC for its mediation work and in particular the various consultations it has undertaken since March, which have helped the César to achieve this ambitious reform.

The new statutes of the Académie des César are available on its website at the following address:

Works in Development - Feature Launch Awards
KVIFF & MIDPOINT Development Award Jury: Joseph Fahim, Film Critic, International Consultant, Karlovy Vary IFF
Danijel Hočevar, Producer, Head of Studies at MIDPOINT Feature Launch Alessandra Pastore, Founder and Manager of LAND-Local, Industry Coordinator at When East Meets West
On this award, KVIFF has partnered with the Midpoint script and project development program as well as When East Meets West co-production market and Trieste Film Festival. Together they showcased nine projects from Central and Eastern Europe that have gone through development within the Feature Launch 2020 program. The jury decided to award the 10.000 EUR cash prize for further development to Usud (Serbia) directed by Stefan Malešević and produced by Andrijana Sofranić Šućur.
Jury statement:
The KVIFF & MIDPOINT Development Award goes to an ambitious project of formal and thematic uniqueness; a comic philosophical meditation on destiny, choice, and the burden of being a human in an indifferent world. Brilliant in its conception and precise in its structuring, this highly ambitious project ventures into fresh, untreaded waters in the increasingly obvious cinema of the present.
Special Mention went to Sara's Bungalow (Poland) directed by Julia Rogowska, produced by Krystyna Kantor and written by Małgorzata Piłacińska.
Jury statement:
This dystopian sci-fi romance is the kind of smart, urgent genre picture we seldom see in the region, and we're confident that the team in charge will deliver an exceptional film that will soon be the talk of the festival world.

Connecting Cottbus Award
The jury consisting of Marjorie Bendeck and Katharina Stumm awarded the film Vacuum (Ukraine), directed and written by Yelizaveta Smith and produced by Aleksandra Kostina.
Jury statement:
Out of a once again incredibly strong selection at Midpoint Feature Launch, we have decided to invite Vacuum from Ukraine to present their project at Connecting Cottbus in November, acknowledging its international potential. Underlined by a visual concept both haunting and reflective, Vacuum suggests that we can discover a missing person's identity in the empty spaces they left behind - and what better medium to pursue this in than cinema.

Rotterdam Lab Award
The jury consisting of Alessia Acone and Mirjam Klootwijk awarded Andrijana Sofranić Šućur, the producer of the film Usud (Serbia).

Jury statement:
Despite the challenges that all these talented professionals are currently dealing with, the presentations of all the projects were very inspiring and our one-on-one meetings were truly engaging. Andrijana, as a strong emerging talent, is the selected producer for the next edition of Rotterdam Lab 2021. She impressed us with her personal drive towards the project, her engagement in an upcoming creative team, and her strong desire to extend her international network.

Eurimages Lab Project Award
Jury: Els Hendrix, Representative of Eurimages Mark Peranson, Head of Programming, Berlinale
Adina Pintilie, Filmmaker, Visual Artist and Curator
Eight projects in production or post-production stage, each transgressing the borders of traditional filmmaking were showcased during this year's Eurimages Lab Project. The prize in the value of 50.000 EUR went to the winning project Atlantide (Italy, France), directed by Yuri Ancarani and produced by Marco Alessi.
Jury statement:
The Eurimages Lab Project Award goes to a project which brings an unsettling yet fascinating vision of a dying world.
Using the metaphor of Atlantis, the director's singular gaze brilliantly synchronises the perspective of teenagers with the sad perspective of a vanishing city. Nevertheless, like contemporary Noah's arks, the motorboats race across the Venetian lagoon, driven by the energy of youth, in a life-affirming view of a possible future.

When everything fails, he sets out to find the reason behind his misfortune, starting a long and adventurous journey to Usud, the god responsible for assigning destinies to people. It turns out that Usud has no real power or knowledge, but simply assigns destinies based on a predetermined set of rules. Mladen returns to his village broken, but wiser, trying to reconcile with his brother and unite the family property again.

The 22nd Far East Film Festival (FEFF) located in UDINE ITALY is held online this year using the same platform as the Cannes Film Market  (Marché du Film) at the end of June. 46 films  are to be screened June 26 - July 4, 2020  (4 world premieres) through memberships to the festival.

There have been many excellent films so far, and these are some of my favorites:

chang_feng.jpg
Changfeng Town (China 2019).
CHANGFENG TOWN (The City of Changfeng) directed by the young independent director WANG Jing  ( China 2019) is the story of a small rural village in Southern China. Complete with the village dentist, an ice cream machine and a corner cinema, It’s not hard to notice the stiff old movie chairs, mostly high back benches where classic Chinese films as well as foreign films are screened in the village square. Films such as Fellini’s La Strada and Truffaut’s 400 Blows are screened every night. A gang of young boys get into all kinds of mischief with each other and the villagers. "Red Head "is in love with the cashier at the cinema who is in love with a poet who someday will become famous he says. Five chapters concern endearing developments in this coming of age film and reminds me of the Christmas classic A Christmas Story set in the 40s’. With Elvis in the soundtrack this film's time period seems to emanate from the 50s. The cinematography is excellent and the different anecdotes related by the author of this film in voice over  from his experiences of growing up.

ASHFALL (Ash Rain) directed by KIM Byung-seo, LEE Hae-jun (South Korea 2019) was the opening night film - a disaster film with a lot going on including a huge 9.0 earthquake that triggers the re-activation of Mount Paetku, a volcano on the Chinese–North Korean border. Before calamity strikes North Korea is planning on turning over six ICBMs to the US, effectively ending the cold war. A scientist discovers if the bombs are detonated underground a huge volcanic eruption will be avoided.  The army has sent in a task force to find the location of the missiles that have been reported by the spy Ri Jun-pyeong played by the talented (Lee Byung-hun), to stop the eruption of a volcano.

Hong Kong director Johnnie To has been to Udine many times and this year he has brought a riveting semi- musical of high energy, CHASING DREAM (Chasing the Dream)
(Hong Kong / China 2019). the story of a boxer and a young woman whose songs have been ripped off by a popular singer. The union of the boxer and the vocalist is engaging with many inventive high action scenes involving song and dance.

chasing_dream.jpg
Chasing the Dream (Johnny To 2020) ©FEFF

I-DOCUMENTARY OF THE JOURNALIST (Documentary on a journalist) by MORI Tatsuya  (Japan 2019) follows real life investigative journalist Mochizuki Isoko who writes for a major Japanese newspaper. She investigates corruption in the Japanese government, and cover ups that involve environment hazards and scandals the office of the president. Isoko’s relentless interview techniques at press conferences put government experts on their heads although on camera they come across as deceitful and brain dead. The tireless journalist and the thorough documentary journalism of Tatsuya MORI make an excellent team in an inside view of Japanese media.

Layla JI  brings a story of young teenagers and how they turn to bullying classmates with their cellphones, which leads to revenge and murder. The cruelty of the teens to each other and their use of mobile phones to film and humiliate their classmates mirrors the media saturation of the larger society – The affordability of cell phones and easy access to them is pervasive and Layla Ji has made a powerful film, in VICTIM(s) (Malaysia 2020).

In addition to these new films from Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia are panels on the new developments in these countries in the film business. For example, Darcy Paquet,  the South Korean FEFF expert did the subtitles for Parasite that won the Palme d' or last year at Cannes  and six Oscars - directed by Bong Joon Ho. He writes  how this film has caused a stir in the country as well as Covid 19.

This is an excellent festival and one of the top this year that made the bold decision to go 100% online and offer the festival to the public. A special treat was the fourth and final  IP MAN 4  (2020) set in San Francisco includes scenes where Bruce Lee invites his  famous teacher to the US.

Golden Mulberry and Audience Award
Derek Tsang's Better Days

The 22nd Far East Film Festival ended July 4 after 9 days and it was a huge online success with over 3000 card holders and 25,000 visits to the website where films were screened for accredited patrons. The festival works with the public because the organizers are so thoroughly prepared for this event directed by Sabrina Baracetti and Thomas Bertacche. It is a festival that specializes in popular film in East Asia with experts that provide detailed information about the films, and about the state of the film business in Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The contacts with directors, distributors and producers is world class and many legendary directors visit the festival such as Takeshi Miike, Johnny To and Derek Tsang.

Dongyu Zhou in Better Days

Derek Tsang’s Better Days was awarded the Golden Mulberry this year and it also took home the Audience Award– a film that was technically proficient with an engaging narrative. The competitive exams - the Gao Kao in China - are equivalent to the SAT and top scores help students to get into the best schools in the west after high school graduation. Tsang's film in fact has made an impact on resolving the cutthroat atmosphere that exists for this exam. The excellent shots of the school and students are compelling, and the plot is engaging. Dongyu Zhou plays Chen Nian, a student who loses a friend that commits suicide because of her exams. Jackson Yee as Xiao Bei is a young man involved in gang wars and is a small punk. When he sees Chen Nian being bullied, he comes to her rescue and is pretty much there for her throughout her ordeal. The bullying by a gang of teenage girls is relentless and eventually Chen Nian has to make choices.

WechatIMG64.jpg
Malaysian director Layla Ji

A film not unlike the Golden Mulberry winner is the Silver Mulberry recipient -- Malaysian director Layla Ji's debut film Victim(s) that had its world premiere at the festival. It is a story of young teenagers who bully classmates with their cellphones, which leads to revenge and even murder. The cruelty of the teens to each other and their use of mobile phone to film and humiliate their classmates mirrors the media contamination of the larger society. The affordability of cell phones and easy access to them is pervasive and Layla Ji has made a powerful film.

The White Mulberry for First Time Director was selected by an international jury (La Frances Hui, Leopoldo Santovincenzo and Mark Adams).   Lee Sang-geun's South Korean action-comedy Exit about the release of a poisonous gas in South Korea and two rock climbers who manage to scale tall buildings in endless bounds to make their way to safety with the help of rescue teams and private drones.

The Far East Film festival proves in its 22nd edition that it continues to serve a dedicated and enthusiastic public with its rigorous model and platform for the best popular films coming from East Asia.

Jury motivations:

VICIOUS CAT
Jury: comic book Zoran Smiljanić, actor Matjaž Javšnik, director Tomaž Gorkič

The Lodge is a film that has all its elements – production, craft, acting and, above all, screenplay polished to perfection, so the jury really didn’t have a difficult job. The film masterfully incorporates European elements into American horror, artfully switches between genres, combines tension with atmosphere, horror with tragedy, genre conventions with refined psychology and a surprising ending. An injection of freshness and new energy into a genre in which we sometimes feel we have seen it all. And last but not least: have you ever seen a bad film that takes place in snow?

NOISY CAT
Jury: journalist Igor Vidmar, musician Jernej Šavel, music publisher Ivor Knafelj

The Swans documentary masterfully portrays the sonic voyage of a band that, through their innovation and unwillingness to compromise became one of the most important groups at the turn of the 21st century. From the display of their industrial beginnings in the 80s, struggling with addictions and constant lineup changes to their reincarnation on the new millennium which, by releasing four already cult albums, propelled the band to the throne of gods of noise. A documentary which is an equivalent to their music. Top notch!

A special mention goes to the documentary on Branko Črnac – Tusta, singer of the legendary band KUD Idijoti. Director Andrej Korovljev brilliantly shows the journey of the band that never really went over the bounds of underground, but has pushed the boundaries of humanness with their uncompromising attitude in their fight against human stupidity, censorship and repression. From the brilliant display and placement of their music in the 80s, through the middle, best part, where the band deals with being banned both from stages as the media, to their cult status that is getting even stronger with time. Viva Tusta, Viva KUD Idijoti!

SLAK'S VICIOUS CAT
Jury: actor Ludvik Bagari, film journalist Omar Parra, director Vasja Rovšnik

High quality animation The Haunted Swordsman takes us into the dream world of mystic horror. The realism of the android character blurs the difference between the artificial and the flesh and shows the grand universe of cinematic fantasy in its entirety.

MELIES D'ARGENT
Jury: actor Ludvik Bagari, film journalist Omar Parra, director Vasja Rovšnik

With its futuristic entry into the beginning of the end of capitalism, this dark allegory shows yearning for unattainable ideals and desires. Excellent production value, technical prowess and convincing acting make Slice of Life more than a short film, over the horizon of film classic. Due to its perfection, we can easily compare it to the giants of the film art.

The Green Book: Guide to Freedom – Yoruba Richen, Smithsonian Channel

Yoruba Richen (USA)The Green Book: Guide to Freedom, Doc Feature – Emmy-nominee Richen’s insightful doc tells the unknown story of the emergence of the black middle class and their road trips from the 1930’s to the 1960’s – trips that were often perilous – arriving where they were unwelcome, threatened and harmed. To counteract this, Victor Green, a black postal carrier from Harlem, published a book that was part travel guide and part survival guide. It was called The Negro Motorist Green Book, and it helped African-Americans navigate safe passage across America. Meticulously researched and presented, it explores some of the segregated nation’s safe havens and notorious “sundown towns”. It gives witness not only to stories of struggle and indignity but also opportunity and triumph. It is a generous, complex exploration of the book’s practical function and cultural legacy. It illuminates the places where history was made, the ubiquity of black entrepreneurship and biographies of brave people fighting against the times. With commentary from important figures, a glimpse into the few businesses that remain today and the historical preservation efforts that are underway to protect some of them. Profound and poignant offering a wider lens on American history. A Smithsonian Channel production.

The Deauville Festival Prize is awarded each year to a filmmaker who has crossed the Atlantic to make a film in the United States, thus materializing a Franco-American bridge resulting from a long artistic tradition.
After Jacques Audiard (Les Frères Sisters), Olivier Assayas (Cuban Network), it is Barbet Schroeder that we will honor for this 46th edition, not for a film, but for all of his American work.
The mere mention of his name brings forth mythical images of the New Wave and young Turks from the “Cahiers du cinéma”. But it is of course also the Films du Losange that we think of, a production company that he created at barely 20 years old to produce the films of Eric Rohmer and which continues to illuminate the landscape of French cinephilia. today.
On the occasion of his visit, the festival will organize a Masterclass with Barbet Schroeder, hosted by Philippe Rouyer.

During the awards ceremony of the Deauville American Film Festival, the 2020 Ornano-Valenti Prize will be officially awarded by Jean-Guillaume d'Ornano, President of the Ornano-Valenti Prize jury composed of Anglo-Saxon journalists, to the French feature film: Slalom directed by Charlène Favier.

The Lucien-Barrière Literary Prize 2020 is awarded to the novel Le monde n’existe pas by Fabrice Humbert, published by Gallimard editions.

Locarno 2020 – For the Future of Films: award winners at the special edition

Two female gazes, stretching from Switzerland to Argentina, have won the Pardi 2020 awards – each worth 70,000 Swiss francs – for productions halted by the COVID-19 crisis. The international jury for The Films After Tomorrow– made up of Nadav Lapid, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese and Kelly Reichardt – picked out Chocobar, by acclaimed Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel, a political documentary that takes its cue from the murder in 2000 of land rights activist Javier Chocobar to investigate aspects of colonization and native culture. The jury of the Swiss selection, composed of Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Alina Marazzi and Matías Piñeiro, awarded another female director, Marí Alessandrini, with Zahorí, a Swiss production also set in Argentina, where an unlikely friendship grows on the Patagonian Steppe between a thirteen-year-old girl of Ticino origin and an old Mapuche man.

In the international selection the Campari Award, a special jury prize worth 50,000 Swiss francs, went to the film Selvajaria (Savagery) by Miguel Gomes, freely adapted from the novel Rebellion in the Backlands by Euclides da Cunha, an account of the late 19th century military campaign of the newly-formed Brazilian Republic against the tiny settlement of Canudos. The Swatch Award for the most innovative project (30,000 Swiss francs) was won by De Humani Corporis Fabrica (The Fabric of the Human Body) by Verena Paravel and Lucien-Castaing Taylor, a political and philosophical documentary on the delicate issues of bioethics raised by new technologies in medicine. Among the projects in the Swiss selection, the SRG SSR Award, consisting in a TV advertising campaign worth 100,000 Swiss francs, was assigned to LUX, a documentary about the Swiss army by young filmmakers Raphaël Dubach and Mateo Ybarra.
The list above comprises the verdict for the flagship section of this special edition of the Locarno Film Festival, conceived as a way of confronting the challenges of the cinema industry imposed by the global pandemic, and now coming to a successful close.

The pictures that tell the story of Locarno 2020 are unlike those from any other edition. Gone this year, alas, is the collective embrace of the Piazza Grande and the glamour of international movie stars. At the same time, however, this was the year in which the Festival opened up to a truly global audience with its first ever online programming. It has been a year of solidarity, too, with the projects in The Films After Tomorrow and those which, like Closer to Life, were organized on behalf of independent movie theaters, one of the film industry sectors worst hit in recent months. A year in which the filmmakers of the future took center stage, with the Pardi di domani short films section being followed enthusiastically both online and in theaters – where some of the Swiss directors were able to present their films to the audience physically. The main prizes for the Pardi di domani went to I ran from it and was still in it by Darol Olu Kae in the international competition and to Menschen am Samstag (People on Saturday) by Jonas Ulrich in the Swiss competition.
But this was also a year when the focus on reassessment of the past was equally sharp, with landmark titles in Festival history and the rediscovery of the event’s extensive archives. A year when we could explore or return to the cinemas of the Global South and East, thanks to the Open Doors Screenings– in which for the first time prizes have been awarded by the Cinema&Gioventù youth jury – and Through the Open Doors. Last but by no means least, this was a year when we experienced the joy of going to the movies again: in the Secret Screenings, in the cinema of wide open spaces seen in our opening-night film First Cow by Kelly Reichardt, and even in the unprecedented experience of lockdown, relived in the short films that make up the Collection Lockdown by Swiss Filmmakers, tomorrow’s closing-night feature at Locarno 2020.
